SD90-43MAC - notice the lack
of a bevel over the engine compartment indicating a a 4,300 horsepower
unit - Greg Sherwood.
The SD90MAC locomotives
accommodate either a 4,300 or 6,000 horsepower diesel engine with no major
modifications in manufacturing the locomotive. Those with a 4,300 diesel are
designated SD90-43MAC units. The main spotting feature is a bevel along
both sides on the top of the unit between the inertial filter housing and the
removable radiator hatch, directly over the diesel. 6,000 horsepower units are
beveled, 4,300 horsepower units are not.
The Canadian Pacific Railway began testing aluminium gondolas and General Motors
SD90-43MAC units in coal train service between southern British Columbia
mines and Roberts Bank superport in March 1997. In an exchange program with the Union
Pacific railroad, CPR exchanged three of their new General Electric AC4400CW units
for three SD90-43MAC's. (UP locotrol is not compatible with CPR units.)
The fully loaded coal train, was led by SD40-2F CP 9019, a test car, UP
8026, and UP 8075 with UP 8072 and SD40-2 CP 6066 operating
mid-train. In the photograph below, by Greg Sherwood of Salmon Arm, UP
8075 is backing to join its train at Chase, mileage 94.8 of the Shuswap Subdivision,
on 30 March 1997.
