Pierre Berton to Welcome CPR Steam Train
Kleinburg Ontario - Writer Pierre Berton will welcome the
Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Empress steam train to the Toronto area Friday, 6 Jun 2003, as it passes through Kleinburg
on the final eastward leg of a cross-country goodwill mission which began 24 May 2003 in Alberta. Mr. Berton
is widely known as author of The National Dream and The Last Spike, which gave epic literary treatment to the development of the CPR.
Pulled by the fully functional, 1930-vintage Hudson class steam locomotive 2816, the train will be making a number of
Ontario appearances on behalf of Breakfast for Learning, the only national, non-profit organization dedicated solely to
supporting child nutrition programs across the country. On 14 Jun 2003 the public will be welcomed aboard as locomotive
2816 pulls a special GO Transit train from Union Station to Milton and back on a fund-raising trip for Breakfast for
Learning (details available at gotransit.com, or 1 800 766-7912).
Mr. Berton, a long-time Kleinburg resident who was honoured recently by the Railway Association of Canada for his work in
chronicling the critical role of railways in Canadian history, is the author of 49 books. His 50th, entitled Prisoners of The North,
will be published next year by Random House of Canada.
