23 April 2004 The TCRC Holds Successful Demonstrations in Calgary and Toronto The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) wishes to announce that the demonstrations held simultaneously in Calgary and Toronto today at 08:00 were a success.   Dozens of demonstrators from the Rail Conference, Local Unions, Joint Councils, Teamsters Canada, and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees handed out more than 2000 leaflets to passers-by.   The demonstrations were aimed at informing the public CP Rail is jeopardizing the safety of the Canadian population with its plans to lay off several dozens of maintenance of way employees. The latter play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the general public by carrying out repairs to railway lines.   An increasing number of train derailments are reported in Canada and the United States. Furthermore, these trains often carry toxic substances that could cause catastrophes of an unprecedented scale.
