Canadian Pacific Railway Plans 22 May 2004 Drill in Shoreview

Shoreview, Minn - At 9 a.m., Saturday, 22 May 2004, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) will conduct an emergency response exercise along its tracks at Rustic Place, also known as Cardigan Junction, in Shoreview.

Canadian Pacific Railway will work with local emergency response agencies and Homeland Emergency Training to practice public emergency response procedures. Responders will be told a switch was vandalized, causing a train collision, and that shots are being fired.

Residents may hear sirens and see smoke and emergency vehicles and media responding to the scene. During the drill, Ramsey County Sheriff's Department reserve officers and volunteers may be assigned to control traffic into the neighborhood. Residents will be free to come and go at any time and are invited to observe the drill from a public viewing area on scene.

The exercise will include representatives of CPR, Minnesota Commercial Railway, Shoreview and other local, state and federal agencies, the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, police, fire, ambulance, Army National Guard 55th Civil Support Team, CTV15-North Suburban Communications Commission and Lake Owasso Residence.

Purposes of the drill include testing multiple agencies' ability to communicate and interact in a crisis, training junior officers and testing whether the public notification system operates as intended around the clock.

Media need to report by 8:45 a.m. for a safety briefing at the exercise site, which is northwest of the junction of Interstate 694 and Rice Street. Turn west onto County Road E and enter the site through the railroad gate.
