Pedestrian Bridge Closed Pending Further Inspection

Thunder Bay - Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) officials here have advised the city that the pedestrian bridge between Gore and Kingston Sts. at the south end of Brown St. will be closed tomorrow, 14 May 2004, pending a detailed structural inspection.

Alternate access under the CPR tracks is available at James St.

The footbridge was closed briefly for repairs in 2000. Built in 1905, it was extended to its current length of 175.5 metres (576 feet) in 1913.

Under the terms of an agreement pre-dating construction, the CPR is responsible for maintenance of the bridge. During a recent periodic inspection by the railway's engineering staff, indications of significant corrosion damage were discovered.

A Thunder Bay engineering firm has been retained to verify the railway's findings. Completion of its report is expected by the end of this month.
