Don't Move Near
Train Tracks
Re: Train whistles
not urgent, Jeff Segal, Times Mailbag, 6 Aug 2004.
Mr. Segal says that since he moved to Maple Ridge three years ago, he and his family have not had a
decent night's sleep due to the train whistles blowing throughout the night.
I would ask Mr. Segal - were the tracks running beside your prospective house when you preveiwed it?
I would guess the answer would be yes. Then I would ask - did you decide to buy it anyway? Yes again.
Did the trains blow their whistles when crossing an intersection three years ago? What do you know,
yes they did.
I would then say to Mr. Segal, you do not have a leg to stand on against the trains utilizing their
main safety feature. You had the choice to purchase a home beside the tracks or not, and did so
knowing full well you would be hearing these whistles night in and night out.
I am not necessarily for the trains blowing their whistles, but am only pointing out the flaws in
these not-very-well-thought-out arguments on silencing them. Please, let us hear from
someone who bought their home and then had tracks laid beside it.
Anyone? Didn't think so.
