CP on Track With
Safety Message
Calgary - More than 20
rail-related accidents in Alberta, including one in August in which a Calgary man lost a
leg while hitching a ride, have railway officials taking their safety message to the street. Yesterday,
Canadian Pacific Railway Police officers were at the 9 Ave. 8 St. S.E. and Ogden Rd. 69 S.E. crossings
in Calgary as well as in Okotoks and High River conducting safety and traffic awareness checks as part
of its Operation Lifesaver program.
"We hope by conducting this one-day awareness-building exercise, as well
as identifying any high-risk drivers, it will make more motorists aware of safety
issues," said CPR Const. Gordie Wharf.
The average locomotive weighs 110 tonnes and, therefore, can't stop on a dime.
In Calgary, yesterday's safety blitz appeared to be a success, added CPR spokesman Ed Greenberg.
"The response from both motorists and pedestrians was very positive," he said.
In 2003, more than 26 people died and 51 were seriously hurt in accidents at railway crossings in Canada.
Also last year, more than 46 people were killed and 21 injured while trespassing on railway property.
