CPR Train Derails
in Pa.
Catawissa Pennsylvania -
A freight train derailed on its way to New York, leaving 25 cars upended between Riverside and
Catawissa.
Most of the crashed cars on the train were empty, while others carried a variety of paper, scrap
products and pole logs. No injuries or environmental concerns were reported, officials said.
The 85-car train was bound for Binghamton, N.Y., when several front-end
cars started jumping off the track early Wednesday. Crews worked all day to clear the tracks.
"We heard a loud "boom" and looked outside and saw a lot of sparks flying," said
Barbara Wintersteen, who lives near the tracks in Montour County's Mayberry Township. "I was
worried about the corn field catching on fire."
Michael Spenard, a spokesman for Canadian Pacific Railway in Montreal, said it wasn't clear what
caused the train to derail. Reports from the rail company showed the train was moving at an acceptable
35 mph when the accident happened, Spenard said.
"We use that line daily to transport materials up from Harrisburg and expect to salvage some of
the cars. We probably will demolish some of them that are more heavily damaged," he said.
