Teen on CP Tracks Hit by Train

A teenage girl, whom police believe was heading home from school, suffered serious head and internal injuries when she was struck by a train yesterday afternoon. The 15-year-old was walking east on the CP tracks near Central Avenue when she was hit by an eastbound freight train just before 4 p.m., said London police Sgt. Chris McCoy.

"Best we can tell, the pedestrian was walking on the tracks and was hit by the train from behind," he said.

The train was moving slowly, McCoy said, but the impact of the collision left the girl with serious head and internal injuries. She was taken to Children's Hospital of Western Ontario.

McCoy wouldn't confirm if the girl was wearing headphones that prevented her from hearing the train. The teen's name wasn't released.

The stopped train, which had 54 cars, blocked traffic at several intersections during rush hour. It resumed its journey about an hour later, McCoy said.

Several serious collisions have occurred in recent months on and around the level crossings at the CP tracks in the area.

In June, a teenaged driver in a minivan ignored signal lights and tried to beat the train. He wasn't injured.

Also in June, a crash at the same intersection backed up traffic for several blocks.

Because the nearest overpass is several blocks away, over the CP rail yard at Quebec Street, some drivers try to beat the train at the numerous level crossings rather than wait for trains to shuttle back and forth.
