Wilkie Man, 21, Killed in Truck-Train Collision
Rosemount Saskatchewan - A 21-year-old man
is dead and a 22-year-old is in hospital after a truck-train accident overnight near Rosemount.
According to Biggar RCMP, the collision between a pickup truck and Canadian Pacific Railway train took place at 12:11 a.m. on Friday.
The investigation determined a black Chevrolet was eastbound on Grid 656 when it struck an empty grain hopper car of a northbound CPR
train. A sensor on the train unit identified a problem with a car, causing the train to stop after it had cleared the intersection.
The rail crossing is on level road and marked with unlit posts bearing cross arms.
At the time of the collision, there was thick, dense fog, with zero visibility at times.
The driver of the pickup, a 21-year-old from Wilkie, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 22-year-old
passenger from the Sonningdale district was transported to Biggar Hospital and then to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon with
undetermined injuries. Crew from the CPR train were not injured. At the request of the families, names of the deceased and injured are
not being released.
Damage to the hopper car was extensive, requiring repairs on-site before the train can be moved. The pick up was a total
loss. A collision analyst from Saskatoon Regional Traffic Services attended the scene.
An autopsy has been ordered and the file remains under investigation pending toxicology and collision analyst
reports.
