Train Smashes Semi

Medicine Hat Alberta - Workers at a construction site next to Costco in the city's north end were startled by the loud crashing sound of a freight train hitting a semi and pushing it along the tracks for 15 metres Monday morning.

Their were no serious injuries from the collision on the level crossing at 23 Street N.W. and Box Springs Road, but the last of two trailers carrying sand was totaled in the accident.

Barry Ginger said he witnessed the collision from the construction site he was working on 200 metres away.

"I heard the horn and I saw (the train) slam into the truck," said Ginger.

"It almost looked like he was stalled and it happened so quick. The train came along - it couldn't have been going more than 10 or 15 kilometres per hour - and slammed into the truck."

Medicine Hat Police Service officer at the scene, Const. Dwayne Wist, said the truck was travelling southbound on Box Springs Road when it turned onto 23rd Sreett. "Unfortunately he crossed in front of the train and was struck," he said. "The train didn't hit the cab, just the trailer, and dragged it a ways."

Total damage in the collision is estimated at $24,000.
