Man in Hospital After Train Rams Into His Minivan
Balzac Alberta - One man was sent to hospital after
his minivan was hit by a train north of Calgary yesterday.
RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb said the crash happened about 12:30 p.m. on Hwy. 566, west of Hwy. 2 in Balzac, about 23 km north of Calgary,
when a northbound CPR train travelling about 64 km/h collided with the westbound minivan crossing the tracks.
The minivan came to rest metres from a nearby gas station.
"It hit the minivan and knocked it off the tracks and came between 15 and 20 metres of the gas pumps," Webb said.
The male driver who is in his late 40s was taken to hospital in non-life-threatening condition.
"He was lucky because he hit the minivan behind the driver's seat," he said.
Webb said the railway crossing's lights and bells were activated at the time, but CPR and RCMP are investigating and looking for
anyone who might have witnessed the crash.
Charges are possible. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Airdrie RCMP at
403-945-7200.
