Huron Shores Brass Canvass for Return of Area Rail Service
Sault Ste. Marie Ontario - Huron Shores municipal
council has added its voice to a growing chorus of political leaders along the north Shore seeking the return of passenger rail
service.
Huron Shores passed a resolution calling for the re-establishment of passenger service between Sudbury and Sault Ste.
Marie. Council contends service would promote tourism, provide alternative transportation, and reduce carbon emissions.
Huron Shores has forwarded a copy of the resolution to federal Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities Minister John Baird and
provincial energy and Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman. Huron Shores argues the federal and provincial governments must
provide the same opportunities to residents of northern ontario as to those in the south.
The east Algoma Chiefs, Mayors, and Reeves Council, and the Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains, recently met with officials from
Huron Central railway and Canadian Pacific.
Passenger rail service was distween Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie in 1976.
