Evacuation Order Continues After Oshawa Train Derailment
Evacuation ends for some after train derailment sparks rire in
Oshawa.
Oshawa Ontario - An evacuation order is continuing
after a train derailed in Oshawa on Friday, but there is good news as crews began to clean up the mess on Saturday.
Most residents have been allowed back home but three streets remain affected by chemical spill.
Those who live on Marquette Ave., Grenfell Ave., and Pacific Ave. are still not allowed to return.
Officers are on point duty at nearby intersections and are upholding the current road and neighborhood closures until further notice.
CP Rail officials and other agencies have begun to clear away train cars and repair the rail line. However, investigators warn that
they're not sure how long the procedure will take.
Two locomotives and 27 freight cars jumped the tracks around 2:15 p.m. It happened at Park Rd. and the 401, not far from the Oshawa
Mall.
Homes, businesses, and schools were cleared out as a precaution, as CP Rail confirmed there was hydrogen peroxide on board at least
one of the cars.
Luckily, no one has been reported injured.
One of the cars caught fire, forcing thick black smoke into the air and bringing Hazmat crews to the scene.
Firefighters were able to drench any potential hot spots and the flames were quickly extinguished.
The South Oshawa Community Centre is no longer open as an evacuation shelter, but alternative arrangements have been made for affected
residents.
Transport Safety Canada and Canadian Pacific Rail are investigating.
