Residents Rally to Reduce Rail Noise
Calgary Alberta - Some Harvest Hills residents are getting fed up with all that noise from a nearby rail line and want something done
about it.
Kim Bolgers house is less than a hundred meters from a CP Rail line and siding.
Bolger says trains shunt along the siding and work goes on all night sometimes and she wants it to stop.
CP Rails told Bolger that it has no plans to move the siding near her home.
"The shunting of the trains goes on anytime, it could be 10 in the morning, but we often hear it at two and three in the morning which is enough to shake
us right out of our beds," said Bolger.
CP Rail says the rail lines were there long before the community was built and the noise is the result of normal 24/7 operations.
Ed Greenberg of CP Rail released a statement on Thursday addressing the noise concerns saying:
"CP is aware of the concerns and has been looking into the situation."
"From our railway's initial review this appears to be normal 24/7 rail operations taking place as our company responds to the shipping requirements of our
customers, including those located in Calgary."
"As the review continues, our railway will provide local residents with direct responses and information about rail operations in the area as we try to
address their questions."
The rail industry is exempt from the city's noise bylaw because it is federally regulated.
