Quebec City Quebec - The Legault government is refusing to hold a new environmental review on the
Lake Megantic railway bypass project.
Nearly 11 years after the railway disaster that left 47 dead, groups of expropriated people and environmentalists
dissatisfied with the route proposed by the federal government are demanding that the funding promised by Quebec for
this controversial project be conditional on the holding of a new favourable environmental impact assessment from the
Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement.
During a short press scrum at the National Assembly, Environment Minister Benoit Charette closed the door on this
request.
He argued that the BAPE had already evaluated the bypass project twice and that it was now necessary to move
forward.
On Monday, opponents argued that the route proposed by Ottawa would damage wetlands and the water table.
