Brockville Receives Grants for
Historic Railway Tunnel Restoration

Brockville Ontario - It's Canada's first railway tunnel that stretches half a kilometre long.

It was first built in 1860 and was fully functioning up until the 1980's.

For the first time since then, it will fully re-open this summer.

Work is moving full steam ahead to completely restore the historic site.

David LeSueur, Tunnel Committee Chair said, "Things are on track. Masonry is done. We're looking at pouring the concrete, gutting, and the electrical lights now."

About three quarters of the 4 million dollar cost has been covered, through fund raising efforts and funding from the city, and $250,000 from the province.

Steve Clark, MPP, Leeds-Grenville said, "We're very thankful that the province and the Ontario Trillium foundation have recognized the significance of this historical restoration in our community. Money from the grant will go towards installing a new paved concrete floor within the tunnel, for pedestrians, cyclists, and those in wheelchairs. It will also help fund new lighting, drainage, and ventilation systems as well as safety and security measures throughout."

Also announced, a 50 thousand dollar grant from "Celebrate Ontario" to support an August festival where the big reveal of the tunnel will take place.

The Brockville Railway Tunnel committee says the revamped tunnel will be a one-of-a-kind attraction, not just in the city, but in all of Canada.

Jack Kenny, Marketing Tunnel Committee said, "The centre section is still open, craggy rock. So it's quite different. With the lighting, we're using the latest, state-of-the-art LED lighting with colours that could be programmed."

Following the grand opening on 12 Aug 2017 the tunnel will be open daily, in the warmer months, complete with electric trolley tours through the tunnel and into downtown.
