Vancouver British Columbia - Known worldwide for its SkyTrain automated rapid transit system, and one of the very few North American cities to effectively maintain electric trolley buses, Vancouver, British Columbia, may add streetcars to its transit arsenal.
The city council may approve $8.5 million to implement a two mile demonstration route between Granville Island and the site of the new Olympic Village, being prepared for the 2010 Winter Olympic games.
A heritage streetcar operation, run by volunteers, covers much of the route at present.
But Vancouver Mayor seeks to upgrade the service in time for the Olympic games, to be expanded afterward to link Chinatown and Stanley Park, among other locales.
"We're going to have to work very hard to have this up and running by 2010, but I believe if there is enough political commitment to it, we can do it," Sullivan said.
