Vancouver British Columbia - Vancouver British Columbia - I would dearly love to see the 2010 rebirth of the Downtown Streetcar in Vancouver.
I am a supporter of heritage railways in North America and many cities are trying to resurrect what remains of their original cars.
I would like the project people to consider the Arbutus corridor on which the old Steveston/Lulu Island line once operated. Although it is at grade level, with the required signal arms and adjustments, this could still be a valuable heritage route.
We need to preserve our heritage and these rare streetcars are a tribute to a time long ago.
Our children, who have never seen a streetcar or tram, would benefit from the efforts of our politicians to restore a value that has long since disappeared.
I'm a volunteer on the restoration project at Sullivan in Surrey for the tram that used to operate to Chilliwack. It will operate in the next few years, if all goes well.
This project is an impetus for the restoration and operation of the few transit cars that we have on display that survive today.
All levels of government should be forward in launching this invaluable heritage venture.
