Hunslet Generations Gala Welsh Highland Railway

Porthmadog Wales UK - The Hunslet Generations Gala took place at the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) from 3-5 May 2008.

The event brought together old and new locomotives built by Hunslet of Leeds, in support of the appeal to restore our flagship steam engine, Russell, which was built by Hunslet in 1906.

Visiting locomotives Irish Mail (red) and Alice (black) raise steam for the day's work. Both used to work in the Dinorwig slate quarry in Llanberis. A small piece of history was made at this event, which was the first time they had worked together since the late 1950s - 5 May 2008 Mark Herbert.

The third visitor over the weekend was Jack Lane, the green locomotive. Jack Lane is similar in design to Alice and Irish Mail, though it was newly built in 2005, as part of a new generation of Hunslet locomotives. It means that Jack Lane is even younger than the small boy standing on the platform - 5 May 2008 Ailith NS Rutt.

All three visiting locomotives arrive at Porthmadog (WHR) station with a late afternoon triple headed train. Jack Lane and Alice have no cab, the way this type of locomotive originally ran in the quarries. It was less popular with the crews on Sunday afternoon when it rained - 5 May 2008 Mark Herbert.
