In 2006, to honour the 75th anniversary of the Glacier Express, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Rhätische Bahn came up with a new concept. Two six-car trains of a new design would initiate a new era for the famous Glacier Express. The consist of first and second class Panorama coaches would be manufactured by Stadler Rail. Spliced into the consist would be a new bar and food service car providing meal service to passengers in their reserved Panorama coach seats. The whole six-car train can weigh up to 135 tons. To reduce the weight the brake gears on the trucks of the bar and food service cars were omitted. This is not a problem as the service cars always operate between two cars equipped with brake gears. |
