At the north end of the Totnes station area there lies a signal box and a pedestrian grade crossing protected by white picket fencing and a gate. While equipment is moving about the station a guard is placed here to protect the crossing. Look to the left side of the photo and you will see the white paddle board used by a guard to signal the crossing is clear. The public warning sign indicates a fine of forty shillings (Until 1971, when the British pound was decimalized, 1 pound was divided into twenty shillings or 240 pennies. Very approximately then, 40 shillings would be worth £342 in 2005 currency.) or one month in prison for trespassing. Ouch!
