What you can't hear, aside from the locomotive noise, is the crossing warning bell visible just above the concrete counter weights of the crossing arm as it dings away. A weak ding, produced by some archaic mechanically activated clapper, it sounds closer to a dull clink rather than a substantial round ringing bell. Regardless, sounds from the locomotive simply overpower the poor miserable little thing. Thomas the Tank Engine would feel sorry for such a bell.
