17 July 2013 Quebec MMA Employees Laid Off Following Lake Megantic Disaster Chicago Illinois USA - Eleven days after the deadly train derailment in Lake Megantic, the Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA) is laying off some of its Quebec employees, the company confirmed to The Gazette on Wednesday. Cathy Aldana, executive assistant to MMA chairman Ed Burkhardt, said that "he can confirm that there's been some layoffs, but he doesn't know how many." A total of 17 unionized employees and two managers at MMA's operation in Farnham were advised Tuesday night that they would be let go on a temporary basis, according to news reports. The freight line in Farnham is the same one that cuts through Lake Megantic, where 38 bodies have been recovered after a train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded on 6 Jul 2013. Another 12 people are reported missing. Aaron Derfel.
