Cleaning up the Lake Megantic derailment - Date/Photographer unknown.
16 October 2013 Transport Agency Extends MMA Railway's Licence to 1 Feb 2014 Ottawa Ontario - The Canadian Transportation Agency has extended the operating licence of the railway involved in last July's deadly train derailment in Lake Megantic. The CTA said it would extend the Montreal Maine & Atlantic (MMA) Railway's licence until 1 Feb 2013, citing reduced risk caused by a dramatic cut in the transportation of dangerous goods. The regulator said the railway's total traffic has been cut by 70 percent and the transport of dangerous goods is down 80 percent since the crash that claimed 47 lives. In August, the MMA received the go-ahead to resume its operations in Canada until 1 Oct 2013. Earlier this month, officials said the sale of the insolvent railway could be wrapped up in mid-December once a formal process was established to award compensation to victims and other claimants.
