Lake Megantic Quebec - The railway at the heart of the Lake Megantic tragedy five years ago will not have to stand trial.
Crown officials in Quebec said today they were not convinced they could obtain a guilty verdict against the now bankrupt Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA).
They say one of the reasons for believing that is the acquittal in January of three former railway employees who were charged with criminal negligence causing the death of 47 people in the tragedy.
The railway was facing the same charge.
An unattended train carrying crude oil rolled down an incline before coming off the tracks in Lake Megantic and exploding in the wee hours of 6 Jul 2013, killing the 47 people.
