"Winifred" in storage in Indiana, USA - Date/Photographer unknown.
28 April 2012 Steaming Back to its Homeland A steam train is due to arrive back in Wales this weekend almost fifty years after it left the country. Quarry Hunslet 364 "Winifred" was one of six trains that were working at the Penrhyn slate quarry in Bangor until they were sold at auction and exported to America. Three of the narrow gauge locomotives are returning to the UK. Winifred is being carried in a container to the Bala Lake Railway at Llanuwchllyn where she'll be restored and displayed. For much of the last fifty years Winifred has been kept in storage in Indiana. Julian Birley from Bala Lake Railway says: "She's hugely important to our railway heritage largely because she has been completely untouched and unseen for nearly fifty years. She is as she was when she left Penrhyn Quarry." Author unknown.
