Enough container trains already! Near the center of Kingman on Route 66 you'll find a small park containing this behemoth and a caboose. ATSF 3759 is a 4-8-4 Northern class 3751 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1928. Originally a coal burning locomotive with 73-inch drivers, the fleet was converted to oil in 1936 and rebuilt between 1938 and 1941 with 80-inch drivers. Its regular passenger run was from Los Angeles to Kansas City, with Kingman as a water stop on the way back to Los Angeles. Retired in 1953, the engine had traveled over 2,585,000 miles. Santa Fe donated it to the city in 1957 where it remains on static display. The first locomotive in this class, number 3751, is still operational and owned by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society. |
