Alberni Roundhouse Roof Needs Replacing

Port Alberni Vancouver Island British Columbia - The Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society is replacing the roof on the roundhouse and the city will help pay half of the $8,000 bill.

Editor's Note:  From the satellite photo the so-called "roundhouse" appears to be a 2 stall enginehouse with a 1 stall addition.

Hugh Grist, director of the Industrial Heritage Society told city council on Monday that the current roof was built in 1985 and leaked this past winter, forcing the society to place a plastic sheet over the newly restored No. 11 locomotive.

The new roof will be made of fibreglass tiles and will have a 25-year warranty.

Council unanimously thought the price was reasonable.

"I am agreeing to it because it's summer and it's a really good price," said Coun. Cindy Solda.

Grist later explained that the roof is pie shaped, measuring 90 feet in length, 30 feet in width on the front, and 60 feet in the back.
