A train on the Royal Gorge hanging bridge. Notice the track appears to be dual gauge - Circa 1900 William Henry Jackson. 12 October 1914 Train Wreck A D&RG train collided with a work train on the hanging bridge at the Royal Gorge. The "Fast-Fruit Special", as the D&RG train was called, was going 20 mph when it collided with the other locomotive, which was going 10 mph. Railroad worker Charles Harris was "cut to pieces", and died, and engineer S.J. Carter was expected to follow him to the eternal terminal. Speculation was the fruit special missed a danger sign before plowing into the other train. Anonymous Author. |
