STRIKE IS NOW OFF AT PORTLAND MINE
28 August 1903

Denver, Aug. 23 - A news special from Victor last night says:  James F. Burns, president and general manager of the Portland Gold Mining Company, and Charles H. Moyer of the Western Federation of Miners came to an agreement today to settle their differences, and as a result there is joy in Victor this evening and throughout the Cripple Creek district, as it means that at least 700 men will go back to work within the next few days. The agreement was reached shortly after two o'clock and the news spread quickly throughout the camp.

In the conference was Manager Burns and Superintendent Fitzgerald, Charles H. Moyer, president of the Western Federation of Miners, and Sherman Parker. They came together about 11:30 this morning, had lunch at the mine, and after that discussed their differences for about one hour. President Moyer and Parker then went down to union headquarters on Battle Mountain and after an hour's discussion with the executive committee Mr. Burns phoned to the mine that the conditions had been accepted. Mr. Moyer said:  "I have nothing to say for publication outside of the fact that the agreement we have reached with Mr. Burns is very satisfactory and I think it is to him."
