The guard came prepared for the weather with a yellow waterproof raincoat as he waters BRB number 15 at Planalp. There is no firing during the return to Brienz which results in less emissions. During the descent the cylinders are used as air compressors, thereby braking the train. This process generates considerable heat which is dissipated by means of water injected into the cylinders. The resulting steam is exhausted via a pipe at the rear of the cab roof. This may be seen in photo number 4 in this series as BRB 15 stops at the Brienz depot. BRB 15, along with 12, 14, and 16, was built by Schweizerische Lokomotiv und Maschinenfabrik, Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), at Winterthur in 1996.
