Exactly 125 Years Ago the First Cog Railway Ran on the Pilatus

Logo Alpnachstad Switzerland - On 4 Jun 1889, the cog railway up Mount Pilatus began operation.

The construction of the railway at that time was a major challenge for those responsible.

To mark the anniversary the Pilatusbahn now offers a glimpse behind the scenes.

The Rigi Bahn was a model for the Pilatusbahn when in 1871 it became the first cog railway to run in Europe.

The people of Luzern no longer wanted the cumbersome climb up Mount Pilatus.

The first license application for construction of the Pilatus cogwheel railway failed.

The route from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm was too steep.

On 24 Jun 1885 the railway received a license.

In just 400 working days 600 men built the railroad at a cost of 1.9 million francs.

The Pilatus Railway Company originally carried 15,000 passengers per year.

To mark the 125th anniversary the Pilatusbahn has organized a depot visit.

From 4 Jun 2014 to mid-October 2014 visitors can get an exclusive look behind the scenes in the railway depot at Alpnachstad every Friday.
