The end-of-track at Gornergrat station with the pathway leading uphill away from the station to the Kulm Hotel complex. The south tower once held the Kölner Observatorium für SubMillimetre Astronomie (KOSMA), a 3 metre radio telescope for submillimetre astronomy. The north tower held a 1.5 metre infrared telescope operated by an Italian association of universities until 2005. Astronomical observatories have been located in both towers of the Kulm Hotel since 1967 because of the good climatic conditions, although one would never think that, on days like this.
