This shot looks across the tracks at the east end of the Ropley sheds. The front end of SR 850 is visible as she rests, unserviceable, outside the shed. Southern Railway 850 is unusual, at least by North American standards, in that she had 4 cylinders, Yes, four ! Two outside and two inside the frames. One look between the wheels and frame shows a nightmare of rods and counterweights that would be a headache to grease and maintain, let alone repair. The engine was built at Eastleigh Works in 1926 and is now owned by the National Railway Musuem at York.
