Vintage Model T Ford Converted
to Travel on Railway Line

Launceston Cornwall - The historic 1927 car has been restored and transformed into a self-powered locomotive which requires no steering.

It has an engine powerful enough to reach speeds up to 60 mph, but the downside is it can only seat four passengers.

The distinctive train-car is in operation at the Launceston Steam Railway in Cornwall, where enthusiasts can view it until New Year's Day.

Nigel Bowman, managing director of Launceston Steam Railway, said the car had originally come to the workshop at the railway station to have modified brakes fitted.

He said:  "We thought featuring an iconic road car running on railway wheels would be a quirky way of celebrating our 25th anniversary this year."

The Model T was the car which built the fortunes of the Ford Motor Company and more than 15 million were sold.

The first production Model T was built on 27 Sep 1908 at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan.

It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that "put America on wheels".

Nine years ago it was named the world's most influential car of the twentieth century in an international poll.
