Woody Bay Devon England United Kingdom - The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway has been awarded £150,000 to restore an original 1897 carriage for use at the Woody Bay Station attraction.
 
The funding was announced on Monday and comes from the government's Coastal Communities Fund.
 
Now the restoration will go out to tender and Coach 11 should be able to enter service next year.
 
It will be joining two others currently being rebuilt by the Essex Area Group of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Trust, due to arrive on the railway this April.
 
They have been restored at a workshop at Great Yeldham, in North Essex, and were constructed for the original railway by the Bristol Wagon and Carriage Company in 1897.
 
They have been rebuilt out of sections which survived as garden sheds and even summer houses after the Lynton line closed in 1935.
 
A spokesman said the newly restored carriages would be much more substantial and solidly built than the present ones, which came from the Thorpe Park Adventure Park in Surrey, and have been used since the narrow gauge heritage railway reopened in 2004.
 
The attraction is open this February half term and again at Easter.
