0-4-4-0T Double Fairlie "Earl of Merioneth" departs Tan-y-Bwlych downgrade towards Harbour Station at Porthmadog. This is the second locomotive to be named "Earl of Merioneth", or "Iarll Meirionnydd", and was completed in 1979 at Boston Lodge workshops. It was built as a replacement using the power bogies and other parts from the third "Livingston Thompson". The superheated boiler was made by Hunslet Engine Company. New steel wheels were cast by British Rail Engineering at Crewe with the axles and wheels machined by J.I.P. Engineering Ltd. of Willenhall, Staffs, for assembly at Boston Lodge. "Earl of Merioneth" is one of the titles held by HRH (His Royal Highness) Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, otherwise known to the great unwashed as the Queen's husband.
