No Plans to Extend Link from Caernarfon to Bangor
23 January 2014

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway has announced it has no plans to extend the railway from Caernarfon to Bangor, but would welcome improvements to the public transport links between the two stations.

Although, If there would be any proposals to reinstate a fixed link between these stations they would therefore support them in principle.

Andrew Thomas, communication and media officer from the railway, recently wrote to Caernarfon Town Council and said, "We would support any moves to reinstate the link, which in my view should be standard rather than narrow gauge in order to offer maximum flexibility including through services between Caernarfon and the north west, London, and South Wales. It is perhaps natural that following the completion of the 25 mile Welsh Highland route between Caernarfon and Porthmadog, that there should be speculation on potential future projects, but it is unlikely that any reinstatement of Bangor-Caernarfon would make significant use of volunteer labour, the basis on which we rebuilt both the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland."

His personal view was that Caernarfon needs and deserves to be reconnected to the national network, but as the F&WHR has no concrete plans to reinstate the line, he declined the invitation to address the Council.

The railway closed in 1970 with the track and some bridges removed but the trackbed still exists.

To allow its reopening a bridge would have to be rebuilt at Felinheli, a filled in embankment at Balaclava Square Caernarfon dug out, and a tunnel at Faenol cleared.

The section from Felinheli to Caernarfon has been converted into a cycle way.

Railway enthusiasts believe it "makes no sense" for a seven mile gap in a 90 mile circular route around and through Snowdonia and want the line from Caernarfon to Bangor re-opened.

Cllr Hywel Roberts welcomed the letter sent to Caernarfon Town Council by Andrew Thomas, Marketing Manager of the Ffestiniog Railway as it clarified a confusing situation.

"After so many recent confusing reports this letter states clearly that the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway have no plans to re-open the Caernarfon to Bangor main line. I agree that it would be desirable for Caernarfon to be connected to the main line railway system but I fear that there are enormous physical problems to be tackled to reopen the line to Bangor and the cost would be enormous."
