In July 1909 construction of the 24.1 kilometer railway route from Weiz to Birkfeld was started and completed in a record time of just 27 months. One of the most difficult tasks was the 276 meter long Grub Viaduct with its 13 arches from so-called "iron concrete" (reinforced concrete), the first construction of this kind in Austria.
