This is the drop pit inside Russell's Roundhouse Car Shop. Look carefully to the left and you can spot the section of rail that was removed to permit the passenger car's wheelset (wheels and axle) to be lowered. The air powered jack supporting the wheelset also rides on wheels so it can move 90 degrees to the second car shop track on the left where this wheel set will be raised, replaced with a new set, which is then moved back under the car to be raised into the car's truck side frames. The air powered jack was difficult to control and would extend several inches with a sudden jerk, not smoothly like a hydraulic jack. It appeared to be a dangerous operation.
