2-6-2T Vale of Rheidol number 8 "Llywelyn" was one of two built for the Great Western Railway in 1923 at Swindon Works. The locomotives were designed with standardized Swindon fittings where possible including the iconic brass safety valve bonnets. Despite being built for a 1 foot 11 3/4 inch gauge railway, they weigh over 25 tons each and are more than eight feet wide. With 10,510 pound tractive effort, they are the most powerful locomotives of their gauge built for a British railway. Since privatization the entire railway's rolling stock has been converted from vacuum brakes to air brakes. The air pump is a prominent feature on the front of the engine.
