Part of London Bridge Station to be Rebuilt in Mid-Wales

Aberystwyth Ceredigion Wales United Kingdom - London Bridge station, opened in 1836, is undergoing a £6 billion redevelopment and planning agreements required Network Rail to save as much as possible of the original roof.

Network Rail has saved about a third of the Grade II listed barrel arch roof and donated it to the Vale of Rheidol Railway.

Robert Gambrill, for the Phyllis Rampton Narrow Gauge Railway Trust, the owners of the Vale of Rheidol Railway said the roof will top off their new museum.

He said, "The roof offers an opportunity to show the locomotives in context within a train-shed environment and the Vale of Rheidol will work hard to recreate the atmosphere. Years ago they sold London Bridge to Arizona and now they've given London Bridge station to Aberystwyth."

Chris Drabble of Network Rail said, "Up until the actual structures were lifted, we were never sure if any of this would be technically possible."

The Vale of Rheidol intends to submit plans for a 100,000 square foot museum to Ceredigion Council and for grants to fund the project.

The local authority will need to provide alternative car parking provision to replace that lost when the land is handed back to the railway.

The Vale of Rheidol Railway was opened in late 1902 and runs from Aberystwyth for 12 miles up the valley to Devil's Bridge, climbing 666 feet in the process.
