Joseph Arnold opened New Trees Quarry, close to the village of Heath and Reach in 1963 on condition that sand would be taken out by rail, as the road was then unsuitable. In order to reach Double Arches, a line was laid to Chamberlains Barn whence trains could use their connection to the Leighton Buzzard Railway, quite a circuitous journey. Although lorries did eventually take over from 1971 the railway remained in use in the quarry, isolated from the rest of the system. Such was the gradient up to the tipping dock that two locomotives were required. Here, number 15 (Motor Rail 4803/34) and 34 (Motor Rail 9547/50) take a run up the slope. By late 1978 rail traffic appeared to have finished - 28 Aug 1977 Kevin Lane.
