Vandal Attack on Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway
8 September 2010

Llanfair Caereinion Powys Wales United Kingdom - Vandals caused hundreds of pounds of damage to a Mid Wales railway station during one of the region's biggest steam events of the year.

The incident, at the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway in Llanfair Caereinion in the early hours of Sunday, came just hours before the second day of the annual steam gala took place.

Hundreds of steam railway enthusiasts attended the event on Saturday and Sunday.

Police said today that plant pots had been broken, lights damaged, signs uprooted, and benches smashed during the incident between 01:00 and 03:00 on Sunday.

Antony Topazio, communication officer for Dyfed-Powys Police, said, "The event had happened during one of the railway's busiest weekends of the year. They had been celebrating the annual steam gala on the railway this weekend and this incident happened right in the middle of it all. We are appealing for any witnesses to contact us as soon as possible."

Kevin Heywood, deputy manager of the Welshpool " Llanfair Light Railway, said the incident had been extremely upsetting.

He said, "We had to make sure the mess was cleaned up before we started Sunday's event which was very inconvenient for everyone, especially with it being the annual steam gala event. Luckily it didn't affect the success of the event and we had a very successful weekend, with hundreds of visitors turning up to celebrate and join in the fun."

Eirianwen Jones, a resident from Llanfair Caereinion, said, "Incidents like this are becoming more frequent in the town and something needs to be done. I don't want to point the finger at anyone because the damage could have been caused by anyone but I really do feel that the town needs to have more clubs and activities for people to join in with. This damage has been done because someone didn't have anything else better to do. I'm hoping the police will find whoever is responsible. Events like the steam gala are a very important part of this town and we don't want them being ruined with incidents like this." Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call officers at Dyfed-Powys Police on 101 or 0845 3302000.
