GWSR has Best Year Ever

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway has smashed multiple records in the last year.

Since March 2018, after the volunteer operated heritage railway opened its Broadway Station, and increased the length of the railway to a little more than 14 miles, most of the trains have been completely full.

In fact, more than 144,000 passengers travelled on the railway's steam and heritage diesel trains, which is 43,000 more than the previous year.

The Broadway Station was closed in March 1960 and demolished shortly after.

However with the help of volunteers, the railway was rebuilt and in March 2018 the station saw its first train in almost six decades.

The GWSR's volunteer commercial director, Colin Fewell, says, "This success is astonishing and it has exceeded all of our expectations. Almost every aspect of the railway's operation has seen significant growth, whether ordinary operating days or special events."

The railway is now closed in order to carry out essential maintenance on some of the track which has been in place since the 1980's.

And public trains will start running again on Saturday, 9 Mar 2019.

During this time, the steelwork for the Broadway footbridge steps will also be installed.

And Colin hopes that as news spreads of the changes that have been made to the railway, the station will "still be regarded as one of the leading tourist attractions in the Cotswolds."
