Soldier Hollow Utah - A rogue railroad car hit the Heber Creeper just before 13:00, Tuesday, sending three children and one adult to the hospital.
About 270 fourth-graders from schools in Salt Lake County and Price were aboard the train with their chaperones for a train safety field trip when the accident happened, said Nate McDonald, spokesman for Heber Valley Railroad.
The kids had been on the train for about 45 minutes when it stopped at Soldier Hollow to switch engines, McDonald said.
A lone railroad car that had somehow gotten onto the tracks then hit the train, "slightly derailing" the last car, and knocking over some of those on board, he said.
The adult taken to the hospital was treated for a sprained ankle.
One of the children suffered a cut on the head caused by a falling chandelier.
The two other children suffered bumps and bruises.
All had been released from the hospital by Tuesday evening.
"They are all doing well," McDonald said.
Just how the rogue car began drifting down the tracks is under investigation, he said.
"It was a completely separate car, and empty when it bumped into the train," he said.
"Obviously it is a huge safety thing. It was a freak accident, to be honest."
In the 13 years of the railroad's operation, there have been no injuries related to accidents, he said.
The train was delayed more than an hour as the derailed car was removed from the train, he said.
The train then took students to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon, where they met their school buses.
Normally the ride should have been over by about 13:45 but students did not get to Vivian park until about 14:30, he said.
Those on board will be given vouchers to come back and ride the train another time, he said.
The children who remained on the train did not appear shaken or upset, he said.
"They seemed upbeat," he said.
