This metre gauge Zentralbahn train is shown about to depart Luzern Hauptbahnhof (main station) in bright sunshine. Die Zentralbahn connects Luzern to Interlaken Ost via the Brünig Pass. There's a branch line just south of Luzern at Hergiswil that reaches Engelberg. Zentralbahn trains operate on both adhesion and rack trackage. From Luzern climbing over Brünig pass the trains gain elevation on the rack for a distance then switch back to adhesion running, then back to the rack again, several times until reaching Meiringen. From there to Interlaken the route is basically flat as it follows the north side of the Brienzersee (Brienz Lake). Luzern to Interlaken takes a little less than 2 hours. The trains are relatively new, clean, comfortable, and on time. One complaint, departing Interlaken at 09:04 the Bistro car service was closed. Get your coffee before boarding the train.
