Murtalbahn Should Run Again Soon
19 November 2019

The situation is finally easing.

After there was only light rain in the Upper Murtal on Tuesday, the precipitation has now ceased completely, and dry weather has set in.

This is also the start of major clean-up work in the municipality of Stadl an der Mur, the Murtalbahn is particularly affected here.

It should operate again between Murau and Unzmarkt on Wednesday.

Incredible images were provided by photographers and TV teams from the Upper Murtal on Monday, a land slip in the Stadl area had lifted around a thousand tons of railroad tracks from their ballast and twisted them around.

"It would have been better if the tracks had torn," says Bernhard Wallner, the operations manager of the Styrian state railways for the Murtal.

The timetable from Murau to Unzmarkt is to be resumed today, and work on the twisted tracks will not take long either.

"If we are allowed to work there, the tracks will be cut every 30 meters and then put back on the track bed with excavators. Our team is supported by a specialist company," says Wallner.

If everything goes according to plan, the Murtalbahn could run through Stadl again next week.

But Wallner worries about the Salzburg side.

"In Lungau we also have damage, but the road is closed to heavy equipment, so we can't get there."

The Murtalbahn hit the headlines once before in 2019.

In mid-January, 100 passengers had to be brought to safety near Murau after a cable fire, nobody was injured.
