The inaugural Sooke Elementary Community School track meet took place on 9 Jun 2023 at Edward Milne Community School, attracting Grade 4 and 5 athletes from Sooke Elementary, Saseenos, John Muir, and Poirier.
The event was made possible with the help of a team of volunteers, consisting of EMCS students and members of the STARR running club, who worked alongside teachers to ensure the meet's success.
The day kicked off with a lively dance party warm-up following the opening ceremony.
During the ceremony, Gordon Johnson, the principal of Saseenos school, addressed the participants and stressed the importance of fair play, perseverance, and the joy of coming together.
"Today is about more than just winning. It's about supporting one another, practicing kindness, and most importantly, having fun," he said.
The highlight of the meet was the 4 x 100 metre relay, where all Grade 4 and 5 track athletes in Sooke showcased their speed, agility, and teamwork in passing the baton around the EMCS field.
In addition to the relay, the event featured individual track events, including the 800 metre, 400 metre, and 100 metre races.
Students, parents, and teachers gathered around the track, showing their unwavering support and cheering on the athletes.
The shot-put field event added an extra dimension to the competition, allowing the athletes to display their strength and technique.
